Safety fears at Florida nuclear plant as bombshell report says
'staff too scared to speak out about dangers'
Alarming new revelations from a federal inspection report
have exposed a deep-rooted culture of fear at one of Florida's
nuclear power plants where employees say they are too terrified
to report safety hazards, even anonymously.
The disturbing findings, obtained by The Tampa Bay Times, center
on the St. Lucie nuclear plant, operated by Florida Power & Light,
the state's largest utility firm.
. . .
My father actually helped build that plant long
long ago. Said the construction standards were TOTAL
CRAP. The push was "fast/cheap" - to hell with
safety/stability/longevity.
Umm ... kinda like all those beach condos built
in the same era. Now you can't give 'em away.
A LOT was overlooked in the name of Rapid Growth.
Of course a condo may collapse, but a nuke plant
could sterilize a huge area.
Beware - though not intrinsically afraid - that Trump
wants to build lots more nuke plants very quickly.
What tech will be used, how sensitive is it to even
minor system failures ? The modern trend is towards
very 'hot', sodium-cooled, reactors. Frankly they seem
more 'touchy'. "Pebble-Bed" is by far the safest,
indeed kinda meltdown-resistant, tech ... but it's
a bit more expensive.
Nuke is just fine - but DO IT RIGHT !
