    . . .

Dealing with touch-screens is a MAJOR distractive
    problem - which means crashes.

Old-fashioned knobs and switches, easily instinct-
mapped, are by FAR the better real-world solution.

My old car, I don't have to THINK about changing
radio channels or adjusting the lights or switching
the A/C unit ... I just *know* where the switches
and knobs are, find them by feel.

I've rented 'modern' cars ... it's all just UNSAFE
to the extreme, sucks-up 95% of your mental energy
to read/touch the damned little screen.

You don't drive in the void of space, you drive
amongst hundreds of other cars weaving in and
out and around in real-time. Most of THEM are
fucking with the damned touch-screens too.

    See the problem ???

MAKERS of all-screen cars should immediately
offer, be mandated to offer, retrofitting. It's
    a major public-safety issue.

They had it right in 1961.

Yes I liked my Ford Mustang V8 in the sixties...

What will be next in cars? Voice control only?
    "Car take me to ..?"

It was a Falcon with a sexier body :-)

The important idea is to MINIMIZE the amount
of brain/sense-time needed to make the usual
little adjustments. Voice MIGHT work better,
but old fashioned knobs/switches are still
even better. "Physical memory" seems the
most efficient - and thus safest on the road.

Yes, I think with voice control and for example kids in the car, very strange things can happen!
I agree that knobs and switches are nice.
OTOH it is also a question of what you get used to,
these days everybody rubs on smartphone screens.
Knobs allow you to see clearly what state thing are in.
That said: I am typing this on a Logitech K540 mechanical keyboard.
    Just bought it last week.
The old keyboard and mouse were falling apart due to intensive use,
and lettering on many of the keys was gone.
    But I know QWERTY..
Typing when driving? No way for me.
Touch screens do have a plus...
Switches in cars may get defective too.
I had a CB transceiver for many years in the car... hand microphone.
