More than 100,000 people have fled fierce fighting between
Thailand and Cambodia, as clashes raged in 12 locations along
their disputed border, according to Thai officials. The UN
Security Council will hold an emergency meeting as
international calls for a ceasefire grow.
. . .
Cambodia claimed Thai soldiers were cutting through
its territory. Thailand denied it. Then a few shots,
now a lot of shooting.
Followup :
Even Trump and the UN got involved here, quick.
The border dispute is NOT solved alas - seems the
core issue involved a very old treaty. It had
text, and a map. The two didn't entirely agree.
This has left a number of areas "in dispute".
Thai soldiers had taken to regularly cutting
through those areas. The Cambodians took to
shooting at them. Things escalated quickly.
SE Asian wars have a rep for getting VERY nasty.
This needs to be damped-down fast. However
negotiating an improved GPS based border may
take awhile.
