Trump won’t let other countries score big ‘wins’ in trade talks.
Both sides could lose.
India has been eager to cut a deal to avoid U.S. tariffs. But
they — and other countries — fear the ones being offered
could be political suicide.
. . .
"Politics" is often more about "appearances" than
realities.
In any negotiation/deal, BOTH parties need to be
able to claim a "win", if they spin it right.
For the moment, Trump does not seem willing to let
other parties claim their "win" - only HE can win.
Now, do bear in mind that 'consumer politics'
and realpolitik are NOT at all the same thing.
99% of what we see on the news sites is the
'consumer' crap. The REAL stuff is done back
behind the scenes, Machiavellian style.
Modi *will* get decent compensation for this acting
exercise. That's how it works. 'Concessions' will
be few. Reality will be obfuscated.
For now, the USA will come out better ... on paper
anyhow. Longer term, don't expect THAT much real
change in the equation. The USA is still mighty,
but not as ALmighty as it used to be.
