Video shows subway arson had all the makings of catastrophe,
yet no one seriously hurt.
On the morning of May 31, a subway train on Seoul Subway
Line No. 5 was moments away from becoming a disaster zone.
At 8:42 a.m., just after entering the tunnel beneath the Han
River between Yeouinaru and Mapo stations, a 67-year-old man
pulled a plastic bottle from his backpack and poured gasoline
down the aisle of the fourth car.
Sensing danger, passengers screamed and scrambled for the
doors. A pregnant woman slipped on the gasoline and lost a
shoe as she crawled to safety.
Within seconds, the man ignited the fuel. In just 20 seconds,
the entire car was engulfed in flames, barely moments after
the woman had escaped. Near the opposite end of the train
car, another man slipped on the gasoline but managed to
escape, once again, just seconds before fire erupted.
. . .
Injuries were minor and few. The REASON for that seems
to have been a very similar attack a few years ago.
Both rail employees and passengers had been 'sensitized'
to such situations.
This is rather akin to the post-911 way airline passengers
react to a highly suspicious person. They don't hide, they
don't run, they PILE ON the asshole and pound them into
submission. HAVE to - the alt is WELL known. Still scorch
marks on the ground from way back then ......
We generally think of S.Korea as well-ordered and of
generally good spirit. Alas, as with anywhere else,
there ARE some who are NOT like that. Nutters,
fanatics ... they look to produce mass casualties
and chaos in the name of <fill-in-blank>.
A subway train is almost as bad as an aircraft -
a metal tube traveling at high speed. Not much
place to go.
Just a note to USA and friends - Iranian fanatics
MAY attempt similar actions. Be smart, be pro-active.
Some asshole starts pouring flammable fluids then
you instantly JUMP on them, kill 'em if you have to.
Sorry, the world has never been 'safe'.
