Northern Chile’s Atacama Desert, long known as the driest
place on Earth, awoke to an astonishing sight Thursday
morning—a cover of snow spread across its normally sun-baked
terrain. The rare weather event turned vast stretches of the
desert into a white canvas, captivating both residents
    and scientists.

The snowfall, which blanketed parts of the desert plateau,
was shared by the ALMA observatory on social media.

    . . .

Astronomers rely on the height and extreme dryness
of the Atacama - it makes infrared observations
    much easier.

An Antarctic cold front worked around last week,
first bringing freezing temperatures and sleet
to S.Africa, now to Chile and Argentina. I think
I saw that Uruguay had also received some snow
and Australia had a spate of extra cold weather.

Meanwhile the Euro heat dome has returned ...
temps up to 117f likely in Spain, maybe
    Italy too.
