NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope recently made a final observation
of asteroid 2024 YR4 before it drifted out of range.
This rare data update refined the asteroid’s projected path and
revealed a small uptick in its chance of striking the Moon,
though Earth remains in the clear.
. . .
Moon impact has increased to nearly five percent.
While this is better than it hitting Earth, which
is now calculated to be far less likely, there ARE
potential problems with a strong impact on the moon.
Depending on angle, a LOT of small debris could be
thrown out - serious threats to all our satellites
for perhaps DECADES. At space speeds, even a sand
grain can wipe out a satellite, or space station.
Practical question, what if we were denied space
for a decade+ due to flying debris ? Sorry, no
Trek 'force fields' to deal with such stuff.
