Coinbase on Thursday said criminals bribed and duped their
way to stealing cryptocurrency from its users, then tried
to blackmail the exchange to keep the crime quiet.
Instead of paying up, Coinbase informed US regulators about
the theft and made plans to spend from $180 million to $400
million to reimburse victims and deal with the situation.
"Cyber criminals bribed and recruited a group of rogue
overseas support agents to steal Coinbase customer data
to facilitate social engineering attacks," the leading
US cryptocurrency exchange said in a blog post.
. . .
Yep - BACK-STABBED by their "own people" (who will
disappear).
This is just the latest crypto breech/scam. They
can be EXTREMELY expensive. BILLIONS go up in
digital smoke.
Pure digital SOUNDS good - but there are TOO MANY
ways into these systems, TOO MANY sneaky methods
to clean 'em out. Often it's east-Euro or China
but the necessary skills have SPREAD.
Still gonna rate crypto as "TOO risky" - and I'm
NOT sure they can/will FIX it.
Want semi-secure money stuff - GO TO a bank, where
you can see and be seen, and use PAPER INSTRUMENTS
for moving money. SOUNDS all old-school BUT ....
