The first white LED bulbs didn't last very
long - and were EXPENSIVE. Not a good deal
compared to the old filament bulbs except
for greenie posers. The color temp also
went yellow pretty quick.
The next gen were much better - could ACTUALLY
last a few YEARS and the price went down.
NOW they're even better. 20% lower energy for
the same light output and CAN last nearly 10
years of almost continuous operation. The
newest ... old 100w light rating, but now
down from 14 watts to 11 watts.
Have a old double-bulb assembly over me so
I can see to read/surf/type. One bulb went
out the other day - I'd say EIGHT years of
near-continuous use.
Also have a driveway light - because the
photosensor is oft obscured by veggies it
may be on 20 hours a day. ALSO been going
for about eight years.
SO ... I'm gonna say that LED bulbs are now
a GOOD deal.
Weren't at the beginning, but tech improves.
The old bulbs HAD become very cheap, under
a dollar each, but 2000 hour op was about
the best you'd normally get unless you
could find the under-rated kind ... ie
like 140v bulbs for 120v systems (yes, oft
used for 'industrial' apps. Alas "100w"
performed at least 25% under using that
method and were NOTABLY squinty yellow/orange.
The POWER consumption was still quite high.

Trump HAS been know to complain about LED bulbs.
Years back he was justified. NOW, not so much.
There's limited need, and more trouble in, those
old bulbs now.
Now have ZERO filament bulbs - and only TWO of
the old 'spiral' CF bulbs. All else is LED and
works great with low energy consumption. Note
alas that it's HARD on Amazon to search for
"wide angle" LED bulbs ... ie good replacements
for old filament-bulb apps. Most LED bulbs are
still kind of 'beam'-ish, but that's not always
what you need.
