For the first time, wild chimpanzees have been observed eating
and sharing fruit that contains alcohol.
A research team from the University of Exeter installed cameras
in Guinea-Bissau’s Cantanhez National Park to monitor the
behavior.
The footage captured chimpanzees sharing fermented African
breadfruit, which was confirmed to contain ethanol. This
discovery raises intriguing questions about whether
chimpanzees intentionally consume alcohol and what effects
it might have on their behavior.
Birds attack holly bushes with fermented berries and then fly off drunk.
I've seen the same - albeit different berries. Some
of them get so zonked they can't even fly properly.
They DO come back the next day though :-)
What's interesting here is that close genetic relatives
bother to SHARE the brew. That's a deliberate "social"
kind of thing.
They're not as smart as we are, but it seems a lot
of the basic wiring is still there.
SHOULD we go "Planet Of" ? Probably COULD now, we
know the key genes, could easily splice 'em in ...
However I'd suggest bonobos, not chimps. Chimps
are too violent, maybe TOO 'human'.
