I've come across this movie a few times.
At first I didn't like it at all.
BUT, on repeated viewing, I kind of see
where they were going with it.
It's a derivative of 30's/40s serials.
The dialogue is INTENTIONALLY wooden.
Personalities/capabilities and vast
conspiracies intentionally exaggerated.
It's a STRANGE world created here - kind of
like 1935-1955 all compressed into one moment.
There apparently was a WW-2, but not as
extensive. The "captain" still keeps a number
of zeppelins in stock. Everyone is Depression
hard-boiled.
Angelina Jolie - with eye-patch - plays a
Brit commander of a FLYING 'aircraft carrier'.
In context she's pretty convincing as 'Frankie'.
There aren't MANY females who'd have the Right
Stuff to be hard-ass commanders, but there WERE
at least SOME. We saw a similar echo in the
"Captain America" movie with "Agent Carter".
Paltrow ... the stilted dialog limits her
performance alas. There WERE some hard-
boiled female journalists in the 30s, but
her lines don't really flesh that out.
All in all - B+
Oh, and it MAY have been implied that 'Dex'
was a homo love interest of the Captain ...
who never seemed completely comfortable
dealing with women.
