Trump said he was authorising the US Department of Commerce and Trade
Representative to start the process to impose the levy because America's
movie industry was dying "a very fast death".

He blamed a "concerted effort" by other countries that offer incentives to
attract filmmakers and studios, which he described as a "National Security
    threat".

MAGATs have never had any intellectual consistency, *ever*.

Here's another example. When the unemployment rate is low during a Republiscum/QAnon administration, the MAGAts start braying about the "strong economy." But when the rate is equally low during a Democratic administration, with comparable labor force participation rate, they suddenly start shrieking about "hidden unemployment" and "discouraged workers" and other bullshit.

Trump's idiocy backfires. U.S. automakers plan to move
production out of the USA and into China:
    |
    | Four major automakers are racing to find workarounds to
    | China's stranglehold on rare-earth magnets, which they fear
    | could force them to shut down some car production within
    | weeks.
    |
    | Several traditional and electric-vehicle makers--and their
    | suppliers--are considering shifting some auto-parts
    | manufacturing to China to avoid looming factory shutdowns,
    | people familiar with the situation said.
    |
    | Ideas under review include producing electric motors in
    | Chinese factories or shipping made-in-America motors to
    | China to have magnets installed. Moving production to China
    | as a way to get around the export controls on rare-earth
    | magnets could work because the restrictions only cover
    | magnets, not finished parts, the people said.

Oh and I forgot -- are you going to be happy to pay 30% or more when
you go to the movies or that much more for your cable bill?

Why would my Internet bill increase?

Because of tariffs which increased infrastructure costs that get passed
along to consumers. FYI, there are debates amongst economists on how much
of tariffs get passed along, but the gist of their debate is if it’s 100%
.. or as low as 97%. Pragmatically, this is an academic debate on
precision, because both their upper & lower limits are close enough
together to not make any effective difference for consumers: it’s close enough to “all of it” to not matter.

That’s a good illustration of how to manage/manipulate public perceptions.
We saw with egg prices how the rate increases exceeded what their wholesale price changes were…and the higher profit margins showed up in their SEC filings.

Best practices is to believe what’s written in reports which are by regulation required to be truthful, not what their advertising or

Do you analyze down to the least significant bit everything you encounter?

Depends on how important (or not) it is. For example, just spent IIRC
$5.65 for a cup of coffee yesterday, in no small part because I wanted a
cup and it was the “least bad” value at that time & place. But I’ve been fortunate in that we’ve watched our budgets for enough years that I no
longer need to sweat the pennies. Or nickels, dimes…but the principle still holds of assessing value, even if one is buying yet another new Porsche.

You turn simple, logical, common sense topics into long numbers oriented stats.

Facts inform decisions. The facts here are that tariffs are passed along
to consumers, and at rates close enough to 100% that the pedantic pennies
short of 100% doesn’t really matter.

As for Internet bills increasing, it's the same as it has always been.

Then would you be supportive of, or opposed to, having government
regulation on pricing power on such natural monopolies? Make a stand.

" President Donald Trump announced a long-awaited trade agreement with
Japan on Tuesday night, a framework between allies and major trading
partners that appeared elusive just weeks ago.

I just signed the largest trade deal in history; I think maybe the
largest deal in history with Japan, Trump said during a reception
with Republican members of Congress Tuesday night.

They had their top people here, and we worked on it long and hard.
And its a great deal for everybody.

The deal will see US importers pay 15% reciprocal tariffs on
Japanese goods exported to the United States. But importantly for
Japan, the 15% rate will also extend to automobiles and car parts -
putting it at an advantage over other major vehicle exporters, which
have faced a 25% levy on automotive sector exports since April. "
