    . . .

Basically, the drought began shortly after the ice age.
The Sahara used to be grassland, now just sand. Same
goes for that whole swath of geography, including Iraq
    and Iran and Pakistan.

This started WAY before there were SUVs - and don't
    expect it to stop.

In the end, a large highly-populated part of the world
will become just uninhabitable. The people will flee
elsewhere ... meaning into YOUR country.

Only a new ice age will shift rainfall patterns again.
Alas it will also make northern Europe and N.America
    uninhabitable ..........

Sorry, there is no happy medium in nature here.
    Somebody gets screwed.

I recall reading several years ago that upriver dams built in Turkey and various diversion projects built by Saddam Hussein for the purpose of
driving certain tribes out of wetland areas of Iraq are the main
culprits for the desertification of vast farmland areas. More recently,
India has made aggressive moves to take more than it's traditional share
of water at the expense of Pakistan. Mexico has refused to give Texas
farmers water granted to them under a centuries old treaty. You've
posted a good topic for discussion.

Water is maybe THE most important resource. You
can't live without it, you can't grow food
    without it.

Politics, internal and external, affects water
supplies, sometimes over LARGE regions. Also,
as said, desertification IS naturally proceeding,
esp that strip from the Sahara over thru Pakistan.

Desalinization, at expense, can make enough water
for PEOPLE, but not for agriculture. Then the people
have to BUY food from elsewhere, many interesting
and/or divisive and/or dangerous trade deals then.

    Trump's Heritage Foundation handlers would
love nothing more than to privatize all water
supplies and make a crime to evade their prices
    by collecting rain water.
