New York Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday denied the allegations
that she had committed mortgage fraud, the same day that she announced a
new high-end fundraiser to support her bid for reelection next year.
The federal government's main housing loan agency referred James, a
longtime nemesis of President Donald Trump, to the U.S. Justice Department
for possible prosecution over the alleged mortgage fraud on Monday.
The referral included alleged evidence of irregularities in a series of
home loans James obtained, including for a property in Virginia that she claimed on a form was her primary residence. Her office has since said
that James' niece lives there.
The attorney general told Spectrum NY1�s �Inside City Hall� on Thursday
that the allegations were "baseless."
�Let me just say to all New Yorkers and to all Americans: the allegations
are baseless. The allegations are nothing more than a revenge tour,� James said. �As you know, as any good attorney, I will not litigate this case in
a camera. It is important that we respond to these allegations at the appropriate time and in an appropriate way."
The comment comes the same day her campaign sent out invitations to a fundraiser next week, which calls for contributions ranging from $500 to $18,000. The latter is the most someone can donate under New York law.
