It's been nearly 20 years since Tom Cruise's infamous outburst
on the Today show, where he passionately railed against
antidepressants and called psychiatry a 'pseudoscience.'
At the time, the rant was widely mocked — and Cruise was dismissed
as a Hollywood eccentric for spouting controversial views.
But now, with a record number of young Americans being diagnosed
with depression and prescriptions for antidepressants soaring
among teens and 20-somethings, Cruise's tirade is being viewed
in a new light.
Today, new CDC data showed that nearly 18 percent of Americans
had depression in 2023, an all-time high. In 2005, when
Cruise's controversial interview aired, that figure was about
5.4 percent.
At the same time, the agency revealed that 11 percent of
Americans were taking antidepressants in 2023.
. . .
Some countries do not allow adverts for pharmas. Maybe
they're onto something.
The US TV commercials and net ads - you'd think humans
were supposed to be giddy happy all the damned time.
If you're not then you need their drugs to make you
that way so you'll be "normal". Of late they're even
selling "Nana Nukers" in case Granny doesn't want to
be your slave.
If you must be giddy all the time, try beer - preferably
not Bud Lite.
In any event, the numbers on these drugs - and they
are not consequence-free - has become just ridiculous,
indeed very damned worrisome.
No more running for the shelter of your Mother's
Little Helpers folks. Life too dull - volunteer
in Ukraine or something. Two of five people on
psych meds - come ON, that's just SCARY.
Why isn't RFK talking about THIS ? A more worthy
crusade than Froot Loops IMHO.
Hmmmmmm ... ever read "Brave New World" ? They kept
everyone on happy pills so they wouldn't notice how
much everything was sucky and artificial.
