Yes, but it worked better then than it is now.

Most Libertarians were just looking for an ideology which would allow
them to Lord it over others when/if they got power. It was essentially
nothing more than a call for them to be able to do what they like and do
    what they like TO OTHERS.

The large-L Libertarian model IS very retro - and
to a degree, as you said, intended to make biz people
into uncontested unmolested little dictators over their
realms. The only law is "Make the boss more wealthy -
and fuck anyone and everything else".

To an extent this model DID help the USA morph into
a major biz/industrial power after the Civil War.
Build, build, build no matter the costs !

But it was also cruel and irresponsible and usurped
    state/legal/democratic authority.

Today, the abuses of the 19th century will not be
tolerated. Also, the "smaller world" has altered
the economic equation to a degree where the old
    model just won't work well.

The "less govt reach" philosophy IS still a useful
GUIDE ... whatever, PROVE that reach is necessary,
not merely something The State desires. Govt dictators
can be as bad or worse as the old corporate dictators
because they get to pretend they have the love of
The People and can exert wider, deeper, scope of
    authority.

It's always going to be a balancing act, an ever-
    changing kludge.

Yet that is exactly where Trump's policies lead.

Yep. And Trump is totally against states' right now. For one example, he
wants the Feds to decide how to handle elections.

    Well, FEDERAL elections .......

Kinda needs to be different rules for STATE candidates
    and FEDERAL.

A lot of places now print you a customized ballot right
at the polling place. Those without ID/cred can get one
version - only local candidates - while those with ID/cred
get one with federal candidates too. Tech makes it easy.

    Um ... no.

There MUST be a dedicated Trump-hating group
on usenet ... maybe you should move there ?

The USA did go overboard on screwing its industries.
It's a large part of WHY so much was offshored. OK
to have Chinese 'slave' labor of course ... hey,
even the lefties LOVE those slave-built EV batts :-)

    Um ... no.

    At least not entirely.

As said, it won't/can't work anymore. But there
ARE many variations on the old theme and SOME of
    them can work.

At this point, I'd say we're on a pre-war footing
with China. The aggression angle IS Chinese. This
is NOT good at all - but trying to buy our way
out of it isn't gonna work much longer. Xi is
very keen to go imperial and now has the means.

The states, not the general population, elect the President.

But the electors are guided by the popular vote.

No ID and you don't get to add to that pop vote
for POTUS ... that's how it needs to be.

Did you really think this tariffs game was going to work?

I could not predict how it would go bad. I am in favour of
    lightly regulated trade.

When we mail it in the ballot envelope, will the Registrar of

Carefully targeted and considered. Not shoot from the hip and hope to
    hit something.

Team Trump also used to believe in states' rights. Not anymore.
