That's not exactly true. You can import that (legally) trough another
country (like Germany). For a small fee and with eventual repacking. And
even if US close border 100% there will still be black market for those
    who really need something.

China is adopting policy to stop that. Perhaps you should read more
of the story in multiple periodicals.

This will likely backfire as spectacularly as idjt's economy.

China is not the sole source of rare earths. They paid lowest
salaries and low overhead; they undersold other mines so the
mines shut down. Once prices rise enough, mines in USA and
    everywhere else reopen.

I do not know what it takes to make magnets, but I do not think
they require obscure Taoist alchemy. China risks making
competition competitive. When rest of the world does not China,
China permanently loses rest of the world.

Canada is taking over transoceanic LPN and former American
customer do not want us back.

"On April 4, the Chinese government ordered restrictions on the export

'Refined entirely' just means no one is currently competing.

    #5 is USA.

It looks like China wants make other mines competitive. If China
pisses off former customers sufficiently, they will remain former
    customers when other mines reopen.

And perhaps you should remember that reading is not enough. You should
use your brain to think and analyze things and deduct why is something
really happening. Let me try to show you how that could be done :

"The workforce controlling US borders for illegal stuff is more or less
the same. So if they start checking ships for Chinese toys and steel or migrants they would would probably have to seriously decrease number of
people trying to prevent f.e. drug smuggling. You know, small submarines
with few tones of narcotics, small airplanes flying below radar etc. It
all looks like "magician's performance" where the magician is trying to
keep public's focus on one hand while doing stuff with the other one.

So, about China ... if you read history articles perhaps you would
notice that on the top of official policy Chinese also always were
trying to control also illegal trade (like smuggling).
