Scientists have announced the first de-extinction of an animal
species, reintroducing the dire wolf back into the world.

Colossal Biosciences, a genetic engineering company, birthed
three dire wolves, naming them Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi
in honor of the legendary creature made famous from the HBO
    hit series Game of Thrones.

However, the white-coated wolf once roamed North and South
America before vanishing around 12,000 years ago likely to
    the disappearance of their prey.

The company extracted DNA from fossilized remains, which was
combined with the genetic code of a gray wolf, the closest
    living relative.

Colossal CEO and co-founder Ben Lamm said in a statement:
'Our team took DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a
72,000-year-old skull and made healthy dire wolf puppies.'

    . . .

Well ... they kinda had to cheat a bit using grey
    wolf DNA ......

Dire wolves were about 25% bigger, and built stronger,
than current wolf species. Speculation is that they
kinda ate up all the food and went extinct.

NEXT up ... mammoths. Various entities have been
accumulating mammoth DNA for awhile now - and at
this point likely have enough to re-assemble a
    complete genome.

Not that THIS company made a WEIRD thing - spliced
a mammoth hair gene into a rat ... resulting in an
    ultra-fuzzy rat :-)

Oh yea ....... what does anybody plan to DO with
these de-extincted species ? Dire wolves may indeed
be 'dire' - ultra-dangerous. Mammoths, well, they
will need to live in cold climes - Siberia or Alaska.
