My dad taught me not to fear because it's a sign of weakness.
My cousin way back when was a little guy pre-teen and I was a teenager and
he took martial arts classes, within a year, maybe two, he was a dangerous weapon so I asked my parents to enroll me and I learned quite a lot
on how to defend myself.

I didn't keep up like my cousin did but even still the training came in handy when I had to exit a subway station at night in a dangerous part of down due to a train
breakdown and 3 teens tried to steal my purse and were talking about raping me. Instinct kicked in, one roundhouse kick, one upper cut to the jaw and a solid kick the balls
and the miscreants went running away.

I don't think they expected my reaction.
Being brought up in NYC goves a person a certain 7th sense where we can feel danger and know how to react.

Don't fear your enemy.
React in a positive manner and if they are unresponsive do what you need to
do to stay alive.
