Democritus of Abdera was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher
best known for developing the atomic theory of the universe.
While he has become known in the history of philosophy as
the “Laughing Philosopher”, he was a prolific thinker
whose works covered ethics, mathematics, physics, and
cosmology. Despite his vast contributions to philosophy
and science, only a part of his original work survived
    through later references.

Diogenes Laertius mentions that Plato disliked him so
much that he wished to burn all of Democritus’s books.
    Nevertheless, Democritus’ ideas greatly influenced
later philosophers, including the Greek philosopher
Epicurus and the development of modern atomic theory.

Democritus’ atomic theory proposed that everything in
the universe consists of small, indestructible particles
moving in a void. This revolutionary idea challenged
the prevailing notion that matter was continuous and
infinitely divisible. He also believed in determinism,
arguing that all events occur due to natural laws
    rather than divine intervention.

Democritus advocated for a life of moderation,
    self-control, and cheerfulness in ethics.

People in antiquity knew Democritus as the “Laughing
Philosopher” because he frequently laughed at the
follies and absurdities of human nature. Unlike
other philosophers who approached life with solemnity,
he found amusement in people’s anxieties, greed,
and irrational behaviors. His laughter was not one
of ridicule but rather of wisdom

    . . .

The Socratics DID hate him - his stuff out-sold
theirs by a wide margin :-)

Yes, there WAS something like a "popular press"
    even that far back.

MAYbe they were kinda successful in 'cancelling'
Democritus - more of THEIR stuff survives while
his was - or at least remains - largely buried.

As suggested, Democritus was well aware that too
many people 'thought' kinda like high school
sophomores ... all passion, no depth or logic ...
yet fervently believed their own nonsense. He'd
have just LOVED to trash "Wokies" :-)

The 'atomic' theory was not of Democritus alone,
but derived/refined from what his mentor Leucippus
had come to believe. Where either of them GOT
this from - totally unknown and, largely,
without precedent. SO weird how CLOSE they were
    to how things really were.

They both also had it Really Close about
    stars/planets/solar-systems. 'Alien' life ?
They just assumed it. For the time this was
    just extraordinary.

Almost all other thinking was utterly, religiously,
human-centric - we were the All and Center and Focus ...
nothing else. This lasted 2500 years - even to Now
in some cases. Governments even today don't dare
say there are 'aliens' - predicting total social
implosion if a Bigger Picture was known to exist.

Tragic so little of his writings remain. Though,
being 'popular', somewhere there's a good library
just waiting to be dug up. They have finally
found how to read carbonized scrolls from Pompeii
    and Herculenium ... what'll they find ???
