In Somerset, England, a British pensioner who wished to remain
anonymous found in 2016 a 2,300-year-old ancient Greek crown
packed up in some crumpled-up newspapers in an old cardboard
    box under his bed.

According to Daily Mail, which interviewed the man, he had
had many possessions left to him by his grandfather, who was
a seasoned world traveler and collector.

“I inherited quite a lot of things from him and I just put this
to one side for almost a decade and didn’t really think anything
of it,” the elderly man told the Daily Mail.

    . . .

Looks to be a VERY nice piece.

The Greeks are gonna want it BACK. Did Grandpa
get it off some old NAZI looter ?

The UK (thankfully) has a very
    strict antiquities law, ancient
    artifacts have to be reported
    to the government, sometimes to
    be returned to the finder,
sometimes put in a museum with
    stipend paid to the finder.

Clearly the UK doesn't think it or its people
    deserve any 'treasure' ... it's self-loathing.

As for THIS particular artifact, it seems to have
been brought in during the 1950s - so do the
    current laws apply ?

And the flip on the flip - the British Empire did
a LOT of outright looting ... but the flip on that
is that so has every empire. Maybe the ancient
Greeks stole the gold, or entire crown, from
somebody else, who stole it from somebody else ???

Lots of ways to think about this.
