State of emergency declared in Chile after nationwide power cut leaves
19 MILLION in darkness: Passengers freed from rollercoasters and subway
trains as locals say 'nothing' in the country is working

Chile has declared a state of emergency after a nationwide
power cut left 19million people in darkness.

A curfew has been enforced across much of the country, including
in the capital Santiago, until 6am on Wednesday morning.

The blackout, which left 98 per cent of the population
without electricity, caused traffic chaos as streetlights
went dark, while subway trains stopped working.

Terrified passengers also had to be rescued from a rollercoaster
    stuck in midair.

The Santiago metro, which transports millions of passengers,
was closed and passengers were evacuated from stalled trains.

'There's nothing. There's no cash. No money. Nothing,' said
Jose Luis Orlandini, who was eating in downtown Santiago when
    the outage hit.

The agency in charge of Chile's power grid said the power cut
was caused by a disconnection in the transmission system in
    the Norte Chico region.

The Interior Ministry said it was deploying the armed forces
across the country to help maintain order.

    . . .

UNfortunately - power grid "logic" CAN result in such
total blackouts. One section overloads, cuts out, and
that drags down everything else. Pop! Pop! Pop! they
all fall down. The USA has suffered from similar mass
blackouts, some not so long ago. It'll happen again,
big solar flare or just some squirrel shorting out
a transformer - which leads to, which leads to ...

Power grids are HARD to manage. SOUNDS easy, but ain't.

Human-regulated systems are too slow. Automated systems
suffer from "emergent behavior" - usually unpredictable -
from trying to balance all the input data and reach
some "logical" solution. A kind of "AI insanity".

CUBA has had several long nation-wide blackouts of
late. This is, mostly, from old Soviet-era equipment
and nobody NOW who knows how to run it properly.

EVERYTHING now is electric. It's THE key technology.
It's why Russia puts so much effort into blasting
Ukrainian power grids - and will do the same in any
other country it plans to whack. 100 years ago you
would have to blast "agriculture" - kinda big - but
NOW, and with EZ internet interfaces Vlad & Xi's
    boyz all know well ............
