This has become interesting.
Using modern tech it has become possible to
read charred ancient scrolls - sort of an
ultra CAT-scan can pick out what's on each
layer of badly-cooked "paper".
The Vesuvius eruption in 79AD cooked pretty
much everything organic. However especially
in the neighboring wealthy city of Herculaneum
the landowners often had rather extensive libraries
of scrolls.
These all became what looks like lumps of
charcoal - but the INFO is STILL there - IF
you can get at it.
Now we can.
So far, a lot of old Greek 'philosophical'
material, but likely we can find enough to
provide an even broader picture.
Alas SO many ancient civs who never wrote
much down ! We know more about Uruk than
many of the Med civs. At least in Uruk
the bureaucrats discovered the baked
clay tablet and cuneiform ... talk about
an 'archival' media !
