It might sound like something from the plot of the apocalyptic
science fiction blockbuster, Don't Look Up.

But NASA warns that the odds of a 'city-destroying' asteroid
hitting Earth have increased yet again.

According to NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies
(CNEOS), the odds of the asteroid 2024 YR4 colliding with
our planet have crept up to 2.3 per cent.

That means there is a one in 43 chance of the space rock
colliding with Earth when it makes its closest pass on
    December 2, 2032.

2024 YR4 was first spotted in late December by astronomers
at the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert
    System station in Chile.

Since then, it has leapt to the top of both NASA’s and
the European Space Agency’s (ESA) lists of impact risks
as the probability of an impact continues to increase.

Just a week ago, NASA considered the probability of the
asteroid hitting Earth was only 1.3 per cent.

    . . .

OK ... this is looking kinda BAD now.

Impact estimates are in the 20 megaton range.

SO - looks like RIGHT NOW is the time for a first
real go at asteroid deflection/destruction. The
time for debate and screwing around are over. The
further away, the more intervention counts.

Just a suggestion - send TWO attacks a few days
apart. The first tries at deflection - some wimps
suggest a 'kenetic impactor', the second is a
nuke and there to eval the result and to smash the
thing harder, just in case. If it doesn't need
smashing, blow the nuke way out in space - it's all
    hard radiation out there anyway.

There are a couple of OTHER rocks currently plotted
to come just TOO close for any comfort. We have to
have a viable defense. We CAN see 'em now - which
    means we CAN do something.

Put Trump and Musk on it - they can and WILL push
intervention ahead while too many others will
dither and fret until it's too late. Even Putin
has been keen on asteroid intervention - and, if
needed, Russia stocks some HUGE nukes.

Or "nudge" it to hit Tehran, Moscow, Mexico City, the United Nations
building or maybe Sacramento. Better yet, have it hit Panama and blast
out a new sea level canal.

    Gollee! 2.3%

Putting them on the asteroid just might work,
if we've got enough heavy launch capability
    to His Rotundity into space..
