    Soviet Union also produced and did show to people quite lot of
    movies about gun violence in WWII or fighting with anti-communist
    opposition, criminals and such. So I have always thought that lot of
    art about violence is simply indicating large empire with low salary
    of military and law enforcement workers.

    It's the news coverage of the shootings, mainly. The media
    are in the business of delivering an audience to an advertiser;
    they must have sensational stories or nobody will buy their product!
