As John Wilmot, poet and Earl of Rochester lay dying, he converted from atheism and repented his hedonistic ways.
But, deprived of alcohol and forced to take bed rest by his illness, he recovered and resumed his former life. His "repentance"
had been kindness to his family. When he did die, not long after, he did not repeat the charade.
