    On 26 Nov 2022, "26C.Z969" <[email protected]> posted some news:[email protected]:

    https://www.foxnews.com/us/handgun-owners-carrying-daily-us-doubled-4-y ears-self-protection-cited-main-reason-study

    Handgun owners carrying daily in US doubled in 4 years;
    self-protection cited as main reason

The number of respondents to the online survey who said
they had carried a gun in the last month also nearly
doubled from 9 million to 16 million in 2015

    . . .

And that's just the people who'd respond to
    a survey (imho, don't) ........

Face it, NOBODY feels safe with the Defund wokies
in charge - and the daily news fully supports
    their paranoia.

On the whole, permit-holders are very safe bets.
Never "perfect" (what is ?) but pretty damned safe.

However I've also seen surveys on what KIND of
guns are carried. Males tend to go heavily
towards "hand cannons" - .45-auto and above
though 9mm Para's are probably THE most popular
just for practical reasons. Most females can't
cope with weapons of that size and recoil. They
    tend towards .380's instead.

What is "better" ??? Well, "That Depends".

IF you are the kind who stays cool in a crisis
then there's really not much self-defense diff.

A woman I knew fell into bad health and felt the
need to carry heat, just in case. Her hubbie first
tried to sell her on a Commander, then .357, but
those were Too Much (she wasn't super-big and,
due to health, not super-strong). She WAS the
kind to be cool in a crisis though.

So, I made an "unusual" suggestion - an old S&W
Chief's Special snubby (.38 spl) and target
wad-cutters as ammo. No, you do NOT want to be
shot with those square-ended lead wadcutters !
That'd hurt in the extreme and make a blood-
    spurting mess !

THIS she absolutely loved. The ultimate impact
was kinda like a warm .380, but the DA revolver
package didn't have to be cocked, no safety to
worry about - always ready and reliable , not
much recoil. Her health is better now, but she
still carries that little revolver "just in case".

They call 'em "equalizers" for a reason.

The lesson is that "self defense" doesn't necessarily
require something that'd put down a buffalo. IF you
can point at the center of mass and fire you can get
by with something much less aggressive and won't need
to "spray and pray". On the whole, .380s, even .32s,
are pretty damned good for self defense. Nobody wants
to get shot - and even those "mild" cartridges will
HURT LIKE HELL and make a MESS. No street perp is gonna
carry on - he'll RUN to the nearest medical facility,
assuming he doesn't drop dead en-route.

Oh, and yer .454 might blow a perp nearly in half
but it'll also go through the wall, or two walls,
and kill anybody standing there too. There used to
be "frangible" bullets ... but I'm not sure if those
    are easy to get anymore.

Fuck the frangible crap. Point aim and fire. Collateral damage happens.
