More recent versions of Access use accdb files instead of mdb. I'm not
sure when Access stopped using mdb, but think it was several versions
ago.... The point being that maybe a copy of an older version of
Access could be had quite cheaply.
While the newer version is accdb, it still handles mdb files. In truth, it is the JET database engine that handles them -- Access is really just a
GUI form/report designer that, well, accesses JET databases (and with the proper ODBC drivers, can be used to access other databases too -- it used
to have a driver that could open VisualFoxPro files; "Access Data Projects" were a means of using Access to work with MSDE/SQL-Server databases).
