I've just updated my old Android mobile clunker to a Samsung A70 and
have noticed my old Gedcom viewer, Family Bee isn't supported anymore
on the newer Android releases.
Family Bee for me was fantastic, and well worth the $10 purchase
price, and something I took to the archives and/or library each and
every time.
I'd be keen to hear from people with a replacement idea.
It must support the Gedcom 5.5.1 standard, and as such I don't want >>>images, just data. I'm happy to pay of course if it'll do the job.
My Android tablet has a place for an SD card on which I put an
HTML version of my database.
Thanks Denis
Yes, I've got an SD too, all of which I brought yesterday, and
previously my Android App, Family Bee would allow me this feature too
I'm sure.
I think I'd prefer an App from the PlayStore, and would be happy to
pay for it.
From your comments it appeasr as if you're manually copying over those
html files?
Yes. I generate the HTML version on my main computer. I have a
micro-SD card which I put in a support to copy manually the files
to the card. Then, I can either use directly the SD card version
(I prefer that) or copy it (very long as my complete database with
recent and confidential data has over 200,000 files).
However, I modified the .css files so that the lines have some gap
to more easily follow a link. In the CD-ROM version I sell, I provide
a directory with optional .css files.
Also, the default browser is not supporting the Back command. I can't
follow a line and get back. I installed another browser (Firefox in
my case but I presume other will do the job).
In the past, Family Bee would just handle my new Gedcom, downloaded
from Dropbox, and the new data would just over-write the old.
I'm interested in the experiences of other users, although I don't
want an App with family pictures or fancy charting, just the basics
will do; Just like a Gedcom, no images, just text.
If you only want to see your tree, a typical genealogical software
will do the job. You may have to edit the .css files. It depends on
the software you will use.
My alternative method would consist in installing some PHP language
in the laptop, displaying the IP of the laptop and then to use that
IP to read directly the laptop from the tablet. Not tested (my laptop
does the job except when travelling). If you go to a library, the IP
will probably be different than the IP in your home.
