I'm quite new to this so bear with me.
Does anyone know if it is possible to trace ships records of people returning from America in 1900's.
We have a family story that says my Grandfather returned to Ireland to marry the fiance of his dead brother, however I'm beginning to think it is not the case. If I could trace when he returned it would solve the mystery.
The usual genealogical search engines have databases of shipping,
immigration, etc. I've been able to find my ggfather's brothers
emigrating to Chicago and Sydney (we knew about the first because some
of his descendants came back in search of their roots).
OTOH we have a family story somewhat similar to yours in that my
grandmother was sent to New York c 1890 to try to stop her marrying my grandfather. I've never been able to trace this. (Eliza Bottomley,
born Yorkshire 1871 if anyone fancies having a try).
We have another story that my 2x ggfather emigrated and took all the
family with him except my ggfather who, aged 14 refused to go. This
seems to have been an attempt to disguise the fact that he actually
committed suicide during the trade depression of the 1840s. As above
three sons emigrated, the daughter didn't. There may be a kernel of
truth in that in 1851 my ggfather was living with the half-brother of
the one who emigrated to Chicago and might have made an offer but that
was a year or so later and ggfather would already have been in his 20s.
Take these legends with a pinch of salt.
