Good Day,
The direct paternal line of wife led to French Canadian immigrant Étienne Pouzol dit Lespérance of Rochegude, St-Denis, Drôme, France, who married Françoise Duguay dit Lafranchise in Nicolet on 15 Sep 1766. He immigrated to New France in 1755 as part
of the Languedoc regiment. His Fichier Origine file provides states that he was hired as a soldier in the regiment on 06-04-1742, approxiamately 13 years before he immigrated. Additional details found on the Fichier Origin file include that he was born
27 Feb 1719 in Rochegude to Guillaume Pouzol and Louise Sabatier (Sabbateri).

Additional research on his and his families origins in France does not seem to have been explored. Given the information provided from the Fichier Origine file I was able to make some progress.
The archives in Drôme have parish records digitized for Rochegude, and within them was Étienne Pouzol’s baptismal record (page 79 of link below), confirming the place of origin, date of birth and the names of his parents found in the Fichier Origine
file.

The parish records for the nearby town of Tulette are also digitized and within them is the marriage record for Guillaume Pouzol and Louise Sabatery (as it is spelled in the record), the parents of Étienne Pouzol. They were married 09 Oct 1715 in
Tulette (on page 89 of link below). Guillaume Pouzol’s parents are listed as Guillaume Pouzol and Charlotte Bernier, while Louise Sabatery’s parents are listed as Philippe Sabatery and Catherine Constan(t). Both Charlotte Bernier and Philippe
Sabatery are described as late, having passed away before the time of the marriage.

The baptismal record (page 4 link below) for Guillaume Pouzol the father of Étienne Pouzol is found in Rochegude and is dated 04 Oct 1691. In the record Pouzol is spelled Pousol. The godmother listed in the baptism is a Pouzol named Gabrielle Pousol.

I have not been able to locate the marriage record for Guillaume Pouzol and Charlotte Bernier, and thus I am at a block for continuing back with either the Pouzol or the Bernier lines, but there is a family group that seems like a very possible match for
this Guillaume Pouzol. The Gabrielle Pouzol whom was the godmother of this Guillaume’s son Guillaume (father of Étienne Pouzol) was the child of a Pierre Pouzol and Lucrèce Gaud, and was baptized 28 Sep 1667 in Rochegude. According to the very well
sourced (based on primary sources) family group sheet for the family of Pierre Pouzol and Lucrèce Gaud (which appears to be part of extensive research on the Gaud family) on the family history site of Alain Lafont (linked below), the couple had 8
children, and had a marriage contract dated 02 Aug 1654 in Rochegude.
http://www.laf1.net/pag97.html#36
There is no parish record of the marriage, because there is a 3 year gap in the Rochegude parish records from 1653 to 1656. Guillaume Pouzol is not listed as one of their 8 children. He however is not listed at all in the Rochegude parish records. There
is a decent chance that given that his estimated date of birth would have been in or around the time of the gap in the parish records, that he may have also been from this family group and a child of Pierre Pouzol and Lucrèce Gaud. The first child
record on the family group sheet provided by Alain Lafont was record as being baptized in 1658. Since they were married in 1654 there is a very good chance they had at least one child during the period where we do not have parish records for Rochegude.
Adding further to the likelihood of Guillaume being par to this family group is the fact that as far as I can tell the children of Pierre Pouzol and Lucrèce Gaud were the only Pouzol’s being baptized in Rochegude during that period.
The marriage contract (Lafont’s transcription of details linked below) for Pierre Pouzol and Lucrèce Gaud was notarized by a François Pouzol of Rochegude. Pierre Pouzol is described as a “honnête compagnon” and as the “fils de feu Louis et
honnête femme Jeanne Bouchard, de Rochegude.” Thus Pierre’s parents were named Louis Pouzol and Jeanne Bouchard. Lucrèce Gaud is described as the “fille de Guillaume Gaud et honnête femme Marguerite Andre.” Alain provides further ancestry for
Lucrèce Gaud on his site, which is sourced by the use of primary sources, and it appears the family of her mother Marguerite Andre was well off.

Moving away now from the Pouzol line, and back tracking now to Louise Sabatery, the mother of Étienne Pouzol dit Lespérance, there is record provided for some of her ancestry. The record of her marriage (linked earlier in the post) to Guillaume Pouzol
provided the names of her parents Philippe Sabatery and Catherine Constan(t), which helped provide reference for locating the correct baptismal record for Louise. Her baptism is found in the Tulette parish records and is dated 24 Dec 1687. (Page 119 of

Also within the Tulette parish records is the marriage record for Philippe Sabatery and Catherine Constant. The record is dated 20 July 1683. The parents of Philippe Sabatery are listed as Jean-Anthonie Sabatery and Jeanne Jeay, while the parents of
Catherine Constant are listed as Thimotée Constant and Anne Pignette. (page 99 of the link below)

The baptismal record for Philippe Sabatery (page 21 of the link below) is found in the Valréas parish records and is dated 11 June 1656. The names of his parents match those listed on his marriage record. Record of his burial is dated 29 Sep 1704.

The marriage of Jean-Anthonie Sabatery and Jeanne Jeay (page 18 of the link below) was on 12 Jan 1640 in Valréas, but the record in the parish registers does not appear to indicate the parents of the couple.

Catherine Constant, the wife of Philippe Sabatery was baptized in Tulette on 06 Jan 1664 (page 15 of the link below). The parents listed on her baptismal record coincide with those listed on her marriage record.

Also within the Tulette parish records is the record for the marriage of Catherine’s parents Thimotée Constant and Anne Pignette (linked below). They were married on 24 Apr 1661 in Tulette. The names of their parents appear on the record and are
listed for Thimotée as: Jean Constant and Anne Contoniere, and for Catherine as: Pierre Pignette and Louis Dedeau.

A baptismal record for Thimotée Constant is also found within the Tulette parish registers (on page 155 of the link below) and is dated 26 Mar 1630. The spelling of his surname is listed in this record as Coustan, but the names of his parents coincide
with those found on his marriage record.

This is as far as I have been able to go at this time in for the ancestry of Étienne Pouzol dit Lespérance. My focus at this point is trying to locate concrete evidence of the link between Guillaume Pouzol (Étienne Pouzol’s grandfather) and
suspected parents Pierre Pouzol and Lucrèce Gaud. There may be a marriage record or marriage contract that I have thus far been unable to locate for Guillaume Pouzol and Charlotte Bernier that would likely identify their parents. If anyone is able to
find either a marriage record or marriage contract for this couple, or a baptismal record for Guillaume Pouzol, I would be thankful if you would share.
Thus far the confirmed portion of the pedigree of Étienne Pouzol dit Lespérance that is uncovered is:
1) Étienne Pouzol dit Lespérance (b.1719)
2) Guillaume Pouzol (b.1691)
3) Louise Sabatery
4) Guillaume Pouzol
5) Charlotte Bernier
6) Philippe Sabatery
7) Catherine Constant
12) Jean-Anthonie Sabatery
13) Jeanne Jeay
14) Thimotée Constant
15) Anne Pignette
29) Jean Coustan (Constant)
30) Anne Contoniere
31) Pierre Pignette
32) Louise Dedeau
Any further insight, information or assistance would be welcome.
Jordan Vandenberg.
