Authoritarianism refers to a political system characterized by:
Limited political pluralism: A concentration of power in the hands
of a small group, often a single individual or a ruling elite, which
exercises authority without being constitutionally accountable to the
people.
Repression of individual freedom: Restrictions on thought, action,
and expression, often enforced through violence, intimidation, or
manipulation.
Lack of separation of powers: Concentration of power in a single institution, such as the executive, legislature, or judiciary, or a
blurring of these distinctions.
Controlled media and information: Regulation or suppression of free speech, press, and access to information.
Manipulation of institutions: Co-optation or subversion of
institutions, such as the military, police, and judiciary, to maintain the authoritarian regime’s grip on power.
