The 39-year-old Milwaukee man who�s accused of plowing through
the Waukesha Christmas parade and killing five people was out on �inappropriately low� bail for allegedly running over the mother
of his child earlier this month.
Darrell Brooks has a lengthy rap sheet, including several
charges on Nov. 5 that led to $1,000 cash bail. Those charges
were second-degree recklessly endangering safety, felony bail
jumping, battery, obstructing an officer, and disorderly conduct.
Brooks posted the $1,000 bail after apparently running over the
mother of his child in a parking lot, so he was free before
allegedly crashing into dozens of people at the parade, killing
five and injuring 48 others.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney�s Office a day after the
horrific parade incident called the bail �inappropriately low.�
�The State�s bail recommendation in this case was
inappropriately low in light of the nature of the recent charges
and the pending charges against Mr. Brooks,� the Milwaukee
County District Attorney�s Office said in a statement.
�The bail recommendation in this case is not consistent with the
approach of the Milwaukee County District Attorney�s Office
toward matters involving violent crime, nor was it consistent
with the risk assessment of the defendant prior to setting of
bail,� the DA�s Office added.
The DA�s Office is conducting an internal review of the bail
recommendation.
Last year, Brooks was charged with two counts of second-degree
recklessly endangering safety and felon in possession of a
firearm.
After the parade wreck, he�s facing five counts of intentional
homicide. Brooks was apparently fleeing a domestic incident when
he crashed into scores of people at the parade. The initial
complaint for the domestic call involved a knife.
