Came across an interesting quote from David Ben Gurion, Israel’s first
Prime Minister:
“We are obliged to remove the Arabic names for reasons of state.
Just as we do not recognise the Arabs’ political proprietorship of
the land, so also do we not recognise their spiritual
proprietorship and their names”.

Speaking from my own experience of being born and growing up in a
country that had only recently been liberated from a colonial empire,
I have seen this process of renaming of streets and places to try to
bury the remnants of that empire in the past, and assert a more
independent national identity; but in Israel it is happening in
reverse, with the colonialists using it to assert their hegemony over
the conquered land.
