Florida Satanists are volunteering to fill school counselor
roles after Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law allowing
religious chaplains into public schools amid staffing shortages.
“Nothing in the text of the bill serves to exclude us, and no
credible interpretation of the First Amendment could. Should
a school district now choose to have chaplains, they should
expect Satanists to participate as well,” Lucien Greaves,
co-founder and spokesperson for The Satanic Temple, said
in a statement to The Hill on Monday.
Back when DeSantis signed the bill in April, he described
Satanism as “not a religion” and said its members would
not be allowed to participate in the program.
. . .
Even a gov doesn't get to define what is and is not
a "religion" ... if the religious SAY it's a religion
then it pretty much IS a religion. What ? "Satanism"
is fragmented, groups disagree ? Well, look at how
many Xian denominations alone .....
Clearly DeSantis wanted a bunch of fundy Xians to grab
these school positions. But cater to ONE religion and
you have to cater to ALL ... Buddhists, Zoroastrians,
Moslems, Mormons, Hindu AND "Satanists".
We went through all this WAY back in the late 60s and
early 70s. Same rules/regs/laws STILL apply. Fair is
fair and govt can't pick and choose just the popular
religion. There was a recent rule to post the "10
Commandments" in public schools (OK ? Kansas ?) but
they can't get away with it there either ... gotta
post Sutras and Mohamed and everyone else's Big
Important High Holy How-To/What-Do Lists.
Now MOST of these "Satanists" aren't especially evil
or plan to sacrifice yer kiddies to demons. Many
claim the religion out of spite for the high-holy
attitudes of other religions.
However, I don't think there's ANY test of something
being a "religion" that would not also exclude most
or all Xians as well. The subject is highly, well,
subjective, 'faith', and not really suited for any
logical analysis. Besides, the Xian holy scripts DO
refer to a metaphysical 'devil' figure and similar
can be found in other religions. State-sponsored
pogroms against adherents to said 'Devil' went on
for nearly 2000 years of Christianity - so THEY
believed in a "Devil" for sure. "Satanists" HAVE
a valid claim.
UFO nutters ... not so much .........
