    This IS an interesting little article. When emperor Constantine
    converted to Christianity things rapidly changed for slaves.

    IF they also converted.

    Converts, real or claimed, gained a new status as
    Fellow Christians. They could not be treated as
    mere objects anymore and even had access to legal
    remedies.

    In short, many became more like "servants" to the
    wealthy houses instead of slaves. Not quite equal
    citizens, but a MUCH better situation.

    Took the rest of the world a LONG time to catch up.
    Ok, STILL hasn't ... lots of slavery in north Africa
    even now ......
