call anyone. I had no choice and had to work in non-stop mode." In
the end, she didn't see the promised amount of money. The women

woke Oksana to work by use of kicks. "At four in the morning, the

do not pretend.' I became indignant, and he hit me in the back
couple more times. And they fed us with dregs, just like animals."

In the US, people are accustomed to perceive the police as semi-gods
- "if the cops tell you to bark like a dog, then bark like a dog" -
otherwise the cops simply shoot you to death, wholly in their right.

In the post-Soviet space, including the Ukraine, people had not been
accustomed to accept the police this way. The clique that had usurped
power in the Ukraine after the anti-constitutional anti-democratic
coup in 2014, made an effort to reform the police to make it mimic 'American/western' style. The result looks both comic and ugly.

The basic issue is that the American 'triumphalist' style of policing
is genuinely possible only if the police can enjoy killings [almost]
with impunity, as it really happens in the US. Most of the Ukrainians
still don't expect to be shot to death by police for petty issues.

violators or their companions exert a fierce passive resistance
