I think you are referring to the job shop scheduling problem (see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Job_shop_scheduling). As far as papers go, versions of this problem have been studied for the last 50+ years, so there are quite a few out there. Just google "
job shop scheduling" and brace for the deluge.
