Urb is on a mission to remake Dubai's landscape into a lush paradise. Following its proposals for the Dubai Mangroves and Dubai Reefs projects, the firm's new Green Spine envisions transforming a highway in the region with trams, park areas, farms, and the planting of more than one million trees.

    China's Great Green Wall

    January 2015

Northern China has a long history of being dry. The Himalayas which
run through the mid-west of the country create a rain shadow over the
country's northern border with Mongolia, which prevents rainfall
reaching the region and annual precipitation figures of 100 to 250mm
compared to around 1500mm for mainland China. The result is the
Taklamakan and Gobi deserts which have a combined size of over 1.6
    million km2.

The 'wall' is actually strips and patches of trees planted in vast
swathes across the north of China. These trees act as wind breaks to
the dust storms that frequently blow across the area from the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts; storms that break up soil and reduce the area's
    farming capacity.

Sorry, I didn't. Where's the water going to come from?

Good point/question. The article doesn't say. Trees do grow in Dubai actually; there just aren't many of them. If they're start, they'll use
native species like the palms that grow there well enough and don't
    require irrigation.

It's a pretty compelling plan for urban design, actually. They're
looking at recycling grey water for purposes like this, and the linear
corridor under a lengthy tram system is going to consist of solar
panels, which will become a very large solar array. Very clever.

There still exist lots of ways where making good decisions and planning
well can lead to good results.

I'm increasingly interested in decoupling the drain from my kitchen
sink so I can collect grey water to water the garden. The worst thing to
go down that drain is some soap, nothing toxic - might be good enough to
water the garden. (In the meantime, I refuse to use good water to
irrigate the garden, so in this heatwave it is slowly dying off).

Approximately 550,000 cubic metres of wastewater is generated in Abu
Dhabi every day and treated in 20 wastewater treatment plants.[6]
Almost all of the wastewater is being reused to irrigate green spaces.
