    ell yeah, that's where the recreation part of it comes in.

    spelunk comes from the Greek word σπῆλυγξ (spêlunx, “cave”) (via Middle
    English, French, and Latin). As such it's just a synonym of "caving". Although I guess the word spelunk is kind of derogatory for caves and grottoes.

    (btw. in German the related word Spelunke is used for a disreputable
    bar)
