It is interesting to see how much the El Nino episodes
raise the temperature well above the linear fit.
It looks like there is some amount of regular periodicity
to the up and down fluctuations. Any idea what causes it?
Ocean oscillations or additional factors?
When I was reading serious stuff about the area more than 10y back
there was no general agreement.
But from exploring of the data available is seems plausible at least to
me there is a feedback between the equat temps and albedo via clouds.
More heat wells up at the equat, a bit later more clouds, alb goes up,
a bit later surf water cools enough, clouds get thinner, alb goes down,
surf water starts to warm, ...
Throw in slight variations in insolation and you have a phase lock
loop around 1/2 the 11y solar cycle.
