You (she) needs access to a news server. I think eternal-september.org
is the last of the freebies still in operation.

visit http://eternal-september.org (note the TLD is org not com)
    click on "User Registration"
Provide a first/last name, a valid email address and a desired
moniker (User ID). Solve the captcha and wait for a confirmation.

Note that the closest thing to "Alt UK Legal Moderated" that appears
in the newsgroups served up by ES is alt.uk.law. It presently contains
just three posts (over the course of a couple of years), all from what
appears to be the same individual (who can't seem to settle on what
    his real name MIGHT be):

    Nicholas Collin Paul de Glouceſter
    Nioclás Pól Caileán de Ghloucester
    Colin Paul de Glouceſter

All three messages appear to be spam -- each cross-posted to several other newsgroups; the originator trying to capitalize on a free publication medium
    to "vent".

You may want to check for yourself (subscribe to the group in YOUR copy
of thunderbird) and possibly CC her on the contents of that group.

*OR*, dig around for the name of the group in which her interests REALLY
lie to save her the frustration of not(?) finding it.

What are you using ? That's the right newsgroup....

Carlos seems to be using Tweaknews. So do I, and they have
    uk.legal.moderated.

Tweaknews is not free but you can buy a block account for a nominal fee
and it's more than enough for a light user. I bought a 10GB block
account for 2.00 euros back in Feb 2018. Admittedly I haven't been very
active on Usenet these past few years and I still have more than I paid
for! - 10.46GB to be precise.

Tweaknews is fast and reliable in my experience. 5000-day retention.
They have their own free newsreader; haven't tried it myself though.

One thing I've noticed is that the first post in a session sometimes
fails to go through. A second attempt always succeeds even if it's made immediately after the first one.

Ah, I see. When you didn't answer TTman's question immediately, I took

u.l.moderated... but that's not the issue. the issue is being able to find a simple reader . I will have to prompt her, best I can, to get Thunderbird +ES working. It's years since I did it.

Is she nearby? Perhaps just *do it* for her.

If remote, perhaps set up a RDP session? Or, chat (via email) as YOU do a step and tell her to repeat that step -- confirming with a description of what
    the display should look like.

The wisest approach is usually to plead ignorance of All Things Computer! :> (sort of like claiming NOT to know how TVs work lest you were forever
repairing TVs for friends and relatives)

Thunderbird has been painfully slow slow for forever deleting large
numbers of messages. Never timed it to see if it was quadratic or worse
back then but there was actually a noticeable speedup about two or three
months ago. I did time it recently and it seems to be quadratic but on
my old pc deleting 30,000 message headers still takes about four
minutes. That's much better than thirty, so yay, I guess, but why so
    slow in the first place?

Modern software tends to litter its environment to the point of
    getting mired. Progress.

I periodically unsubscribe from sluggish newsgroups, terminate
thunderbird, delete all files associated with the group in .thunderbird/<hash>.default/News/<server>, then resubscribe and
mark everything as read. That cures the sluggishness.

Maybe there are better ways, I dont't know.

I haven't noticed, but my setup is peculiar.

Using Linux, I have a local usenet proxy server, "leafnode" that does
all the storage. Thunderbird is set to cache only metadata, not message contents. The caveat is I can not do content search.

For instance, on this group TB says I have 95961 unread posts.

I use something similar -- though for different reasons.
I've an agent (headless) that just grabs posts periodically
(as well as when a client goes looking for content).

The agent has "learned" which posts I am likely to want to see
and shows me those subject lines -- much like an initial
connection to a newsgroup server would do.

It, then, watches to see which posts I show an interest in
and pulls down the additional content in a true agent role
(i.e., ES thinks *it* is their client; and it thinks TB
    is it's client)

If I choose (using whatever criteria I deem appropriate *now*)
not to view a post, then the agent updates its knowledge of my
preferences to reinforce a lack of interest in "that" post.

As a result, posts that it deems not interesting to me never
are SHOWN to me. So, it looks like there are fewer posts
than there actually might be, on the (ES) server.

I used this to prototype the algorithm that screens my incoming
phone calls. I.e., if I never answer calls from particular
numbers (or, from particular VOICES or discussing particular
content), then don't bother ringing my phone. ANSWER the
incoming phone call (if you need something more than the CID)
and make your "ring through" decision, there.

Update your understanding of my preferences based on the
calls that you *do* ring through and how I treat *those*.

E.g., someone who owned the number previously must have incurred
student debt -- and has been avoiding paying it back. We no
longer are "bothered" by those calls as the "attendant"
notices them and just never disturbs us (or the answering
    machine) with them.

[You can see how USENET would be a great simulator for
unsolicited incoming "contacts" -- far quicker to train
an agent than relying on a volume of telephone contacts!]

[[Amusing side effect: Once an agent has "learned" of your
preference NOT to field contacts from a particular source,
they cease to exist -- so, you have no *implicit* mechanism to
reinforce a desire *to* receive them; you're never given that
option because those would represent "unwanted disturbances".
I'm still debating as to whether or not I *should* fix this...]]

For instance, on this group TB says I have 95961 unread posts.

I see just a handful each day. The more prolific the poster,
the quicker their posts are elided ("Oh, he didn't read THAT
    post, either!")

Hmm. It's a good idea for many things.

The problem is that scalable algorithms can be far more complex than
quick algorithms, so guess which usually win?

Slowness and instability are often caused by memory leaks as well.

Maybe there are better ways, I dont't know.

In the realtime world, we find that many things are best implemented
as a bidirectional linked-list block FIFO, with access to both ends.
This architecture has O[1] scaling, right down to the last block,
which allows graceful behavior even when overloaded.

Is she nearby?  Perhaps just *do it* for her.

If remote, perhaps set up a RDP session?  Or, chat (via email) as YOU do a step
and tell her to repeat that step -- confirming with a description of what
    the display should look like.

The wisest approach is usually to plead ignorance of All Things Computer!  :>
(sort of like claiming NOT to know how TVs work lest you were forever
repairing TVs for friends and relatives)

I'm going to try and get her to come round to mine- she's not far away but not
in good health right now. Side by side, I should be able to sort her out...

Does she have a laptop -- so you could actually set things up for her
and then watch her using it?

If not (requiring her to remember lots of steps to take when she gets
back home), perhaps *you* could bring a laptop to her place so you
could be seated alongside her "desktop" to show what's happening?

Isn't it fun being someone's IT department? (NOT!)
