"Women who boil corn should be boiled."
Had a neighbor many years ago who hated to make corn-on-the-cob for her
family. She said it made the whole house steamy, and nobody ever ate it
anyway. Turns out she thought you had to boil it until the *cob* was
tender! My mom gave her obvious pointers, and the neighbors began
enjoying corn-on-the-cob.
True story.
Seems to be an American thing. Do any other countries eat this stuff
with the same relish?[1]
[1] Relish: in this instance means enjoyment, not the sauce you put on burgers.
Ha! New word for me. (relish as sauce)
It is at least a north american thing, including Canadians, thus the
lower case. Although I have seen fresh corn in the cob since a year or
two in the supermarket here (Spain), tentatively.
In the 80's, my mother did not know you could eat corn. I had to show
her, you cook the grains the same as peas (bought as a clean grain,
tinned or frozen). She never took a liking for it, she had the idea that
it was animal food only, not fit for humans.
