  • stainless steel 304 and brine

    Is brine corrosive to stainless steel 304? Would 304 rust in the
    presence of brine?

    Yes. But usually some amount of biology (or stirring) is required to get the reaction to proceed to mechanical failure.

    The passivation (removal of free iron on the surface) of the surface will depend on how fast the first corrosion occurs. And you can add free iron to that surface just by touching it with iron tools.

    Even 316L can have issues in brine. Carpenter 20 is a better, if more expensive, choice.

    Thank you for the answer. What about in less concentrated salt solution,
    say, 0.5%?

    Same song, second verse. It will just take longer to be a problem. Cast 304SS parts might seem to last forever, assuming the passivation layer stays intact.

    Yes, especially if the SS is stressed. 316L is better though still
    not suitable.
    We make hypochlorite mixes in 316SS but only for the mixing. We never
    store it in SS.
    Use plastic if possible.
