Yes. But usually some amount of biology (or stirring) is required to get the reaction to proceed to mechanical failure.
The passivation (removal of free iron on the surface) of the surface will depend on how fast the first corrosion occurs. And you can add free iron to that surface just by touching it with iron tools.
Even 316L can have issues in brine. Carpenter 20 is a better, if more expensive, choice.
