  • alcohol content

    On the label of any bottle of booze, beer, or wine, is printed
    the alcohol content, as percentage. How is this measured?

    And, why is it defined by volume? Chemistry involves
    interactions of molecules - matter - not volume. Shouldn't
    the alcohol content be presented as percentage of weight?

    And even worse, what does % by volume mean in this case? The volume
    of ethanol-water solutions is notoriously different from the sum
    of the volumes of the components.
