"First direct evidence of lion hunting and the early use of a lion pelt by Neanderthals"
During the UP, lions become an important theme in Paleolithic art, and are more frequent in anthropogenic faunal assemblages. But the relationship between hominins & lions in earlier periods is poorly known, primarily interpreted as inter-spp competition.
Here we present new evidence for MP Hn/cave-lion interactions. We report new evidence of hunting lesions on the 48-ka cave-lion skeleton of Siegsdorf (Germany) that attest to the earliest direct instance of a large predator kill in human history. A
comparative analysis of a partial puncture to a rib suggests: the fatal stab was delivered with a wooden thrusting spear. We also present the discovery of distal lion-phalanges at least 190 ka from Einhornhöhle (Germany): the earliest example of the use
of cave-lion skin by Hn in C-Europe. Our study provides novel evidence on a new dimension of Hn behavioral complexity. ... The cave-lion phalanges from Einhornhöhle provide earliest insights into the potential use of lion pelt by MP hominins, adding to
the existing body of evidence that suggests the exploitation of large predators, incl. previous observations of MP skinning cut-marks on lion phalanges.
Thanks but what don't you understand in this paper?
- 48 ka, Hs was already "everywhere",
- Hn had bigger brains than Hs: no wonder if they might have used lion-skin,
- "potential use",
etc.
All this nowhere contradicts that Hn had bigger brains than Hs (DHA etc. in aquatic foods), pachyosteosclerosis (frequent shallow+slow diving), huge lungs & broad throax, big nose in a projecting mid-face surrounded by large air-sinuses (frequent back-
floating), no chin, low forehead + supra-orbital torus & long low flat brain-skull (platycephaly: streamline), dorso-ventrally flattened femora (platymeria) & shorter tibias (not for running), broader pelvis (platypelloidy) + laterally-directed & long
femoral necks (lateral leg movements), flatter & broader feet, fossilisations at rivers & coasts, ear exostoses (water irrigation) etc.etc.: there's 0 doubt Hn still dived regularly (seasonally?), most likely mostly for shellfish (stone tools).
Why don't you inform a little bit before trying to say something?? Google e.g. "Attenborough verhaegen" :-)
