• My Journey to Waterside Evolution: Wolpoff

    From JTEM is so reasonable@21:1/5 to All on Fri Nov 3 20:44:36 2023
    The good Doctor will like this, if he hasn't seen it
    already. It's not about how close or far away his
    position is, it's what you can mine from his talks.

    Oddly, Wolpoff was NOT an advocate of Aquatic Ape,
    least not publicly, not when I discovered him, but his
    ideas were to send me careening off the path of the
    status quo, firmly to the Waterside.

    And, yes, I now see his Multi Regionalism as fully
    compatible with Aquatic Ape...

    It's no longer than any WHATTALKS video, if not a
    bit shorter, so enjoy!

    I did not enjoy it, JTEM:
    -- still afrocentric prejudices:
    but our Pliocene Homo (Yohn cs 2005 PLoS Biol.3:1):
    they followed the N-Ind.Ocean coasts -> Java: shellfish-diving!
    -- still anthropocentric prejudices:
    they believe all "hominins" = "human ancestors",
    but didn't low- & highland gorillas & chimps & bonobos have ancestors??

    My hypothesis is simple:
    the late-Miocene hominid LCA was BP in Red Sea forests,
    google "aquarboreal" (vertical wading+climbing).
    8-7 Ma, Praeanthropus=Gorilla followed the N-Rift -> Afar.
    6-5 Ma, the Red Sea opened into the Gulf of Aden:
    - Australopithecus=Pan -> right -> W-Ind.Ocean coast -> S-Rift -> Transvaal,
    - Homo -> left -> N-Id.Ocean coast -> Java H.erectus = shellfish-diving.

    E- & S-Afr.australopiths largely evolved in parallel: Gorilla//Pan: schematically: from aquarboreal to knuckle-walking:
    late-Pliocene graciles -> early-Pleist.robusts -> late-Pleist.Afr.apes KWing:
    - Gorilla afarensis->boisei->gorilla //
    - Pan africanus->robustus->paniscus/trogl.

    IOW, hominids had to split in (at least) 3 genera (G, P, H):
    they were geographically isolated.
