The Aquatic Ape Hypothesis suggests that human evolution was spurred by a coastal lifestyle and potentially aquatic adaptations. It was initially put forward by Alister Hardy and was successfully popularized by Elaine Morgan years later.
Gioacchino Sera (1878–1960) & Max Westenhoeffer (or Westenhöfer, 1871–1957) - independently - already proposed human (semi)aquatic evolution, based on convergences of kidneys, spleen, hymen, appendix, skin & hair with aquatic mammals.
