• Michael Crawford WHAT talk tomorrow Sunday

From [email protected]@21:1/5 to All on Sat Oct 8 14:39:24 2022
    Dear One and All,
Please consider yourself most cordially invited to the 12th in our WHAT Talks series, next Sunday, 9th October, at 9pm West Australian Time, (2pm in the UK).
The Zoom link is at the end. Please feel free to copy this email it to anyone who you think might be interested in why we are so different from our chimpanzee & gorilla cousins generally, and in particular why we, alone, walk on 2 legs. Note that the
invite to the meeting states at 8:30 pm start, but this is just to allow the speaker & a few other people to join early.
A "waiting room" system will be in operation so if you do join early, please be patient while we test everything before allowing people "in".
The meeting is scheduled to start on the hour at 9pm W.Australian time, 2pm in the UK, 3pm Central European time and 9am on the Eastern seaboard in the USA. It is scheduled to last about 1 hour.
Jump to the end if you want to go straight to the link.
Read on if you want to read more about Michael & his talk.
We are very lucky to have Michael Crawford as our next guest speaker. He is the director of the Institute of Brain Chemistry & Human at Imperial College London and was a pioneer of research into the vital role of essential fatty acids in brain
    development.
From the point of view of waterside hypotheses, Michael has been a key proponent of a coastal phase in our evolution for many years, and made an excellent case for it in his brilliant book "The Driving Force" published in 1989. In a nutshell, Michael
argues that nervous systems originated in the ocean, and that large brains in mammals generally are much more likely to evolve in those that feed off the marine food chain.
Potted Bio: Michael A Crawford PhD, FRSB, FRCPath
Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, the Royal Society of Biology. PhD from the University of London, thesis “Influence of pH on the excretion of some weak acids and bases”1960 at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School, Hammersmith, London.
Then head Department of Biochemistry, Makerere University Medical College, Kampala, Uganda till 1965, but with continued research laboratory until 1972. Wellcome visiting fellow to Prof Ernst Baranay, Pharmacology, University of Uppsala, head,
biochemistry at the Nuffield Institute of Comparative Medicine till 1990. Director Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human, Nutrition, Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children, Hackney, and London Metropolitan University. 2011-2019 was Chief Investigator
for FOSS1, an RCT at Imperial College, London, UK where he is now a visiting Professor.
Research career started with the identification of the genetic cause of Hartnup Disease 1961. Published the reason for the striking contrast in cancer & heart disease types in Europe & East Africa. Provided evidence for the role of docosahexaenoic acid
(DHA) in the evolution of the brain and for the essentiality of omega 3 in the 1970s. His laboratory was a WHO collaborating centre, 1978-86 for an international study on chemical contraceptives & human milk lipids. He was a WHO consultant for the Joint
WHO/FAO reports on the role of lipids in human nutrition 1976, ’94 & 2010. Described the over-riding importance of maternal health & nutrition prior to conception & lipid nutrition in relation to neuro-development & disorders. Published over 300 peer
reviewed papers & written 3 books. Frequently invited to give Keynote lectures. Received many international awards incl. the Order of the Rising Sun, for his contribution to science & culture, from the Emperor of Japan, and elected a Freeman of the
    City of London in 2015.
The Talk: The Marine Driving Force of Human Encephalisation
Michael's presentation will start with a short critique of John Langdon's talk last month about bipedalism & the currently popular "Endurance Running" model of human evolution before outlining his main thesis, that the key feature of human
encephalisation (our brains are 3 x bigger than that of chimpanzees) cannot be explained by savannah, or other purely terrestrial, models. Michael's expertise in lipid biochemistry led him to postulate that the coastal marine chain was the only eco-
system that really could have fuelled the growth of the human brain.

Bird eggs are higher in brain building fatty acids than any seafood.
Trout in shallow crystalline streams are higher in omega 3 than marine oysters and clams.

From the point of view of waterside hypotheses, Michael has been a key proponent of a coastal phase in our evolution for many years, and made an excellent case for it in his brilliant book "The Driving Force" published in 1989. In a nutshell,
Michael argues that nervous systems originated in the ocean, and that large brains in mammals generally are much more likely to evolve in those that feed off the marine food chain.
Potted Bio: Michael A Crawford PhD, FRSB, FRCPath
Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, the Royal Society of Biology. PhD from the University of London, thesis “Influence of pH on the excretion of some weak acids and bases”1960 at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School, Hammersmith,
London.
2011-2019 was Chief Investigator for
FOSS1, an RCT at Imperial College, London, UK where he is now a visiting Professor.
Research career started with the identification of the genetic cause of Hartnup Disease 1961. Published the reason for the striking contrast in cancer & heart disease types in Europe & East Africa. Provided evidence for the role of
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the evolution of the brain and for the essentiality of omega 3 in the 1970s. His laboratory was a WHO collaborating centre, 1978-86 for an international study on chemical contraceptives & human milk lipids. He was a WHO
consultant for the Joint WHO/FAO reports on the role of lipids in human nutrition 1976, ’94 & 2010. Described the over-riding importance of maternal health & nutrition prior to conception & lipid nutrition in relation to neuro-development & disorders.
Published over 300 peer reviewed papers & written 3 books. Frequently invited to give Keynote lectures. Received many international awards incl. the Order of the Rising Sun, for his contribution to science & culture, from the Emperor of Japan, and
elected a Freeman of the City of London in 2015.

I almost made it. I set my alarm, got up early but my room mate invited me out to breakfast so... yeah, *Food*!

    I'll catch it on youtube.

These are great talks. Well worth the trouble but... he shared his blueberry pancakes!

I got corned beef hash, eggs, toast, home fries... all low fat stuff.

Note
that the invite to the meeting states at 8:30 pm start, but this is just to allow the speaker & a few other people to join early.

Sometimes, and I'm not saying all the time but sometimes, when you have
