I hadn't heard of these, but reminds me of baton exchange in relay races in track & field I did in high school.
What they describe:
: When someone carrying a message stick entered another group’s country, they announced
: themselves with smoke signals and were then accompanied safely with the message stick
: to the elders so that they may speak their verbal message.
And then immediately...
: The messages transmitted by these message sticks included announcements of
: ceremonies, invitations to corroborees, notices, requests, disputes, warnings,
: meetings, marriage arrangements, notification of a family member passing,
: requests for objects, and trade negotiations.
Not according to what they JUST SAID!
They describe them as a flag of truce. You show the stick, you get escorted safely
to the big shot so you can speak to him. But in the same piece you're not speaking
to him, the stick itself is conveying the message.
Which reiterates a common point of mine: If it's in the media and pertains the slightest to science, it's utter shit. It's crap. It wouldn't be worth pissing on even
if it was on fire, it's so devoid of value.
